Kids In Education

Most of the children work on the land during the spring, summer, and fall. The brutal winter months are the only chance they get for a basic education.

There is an almost total lack of formal education in Hazarajat, one of the poorest regions of the country. Throughout Afghanistan, children of poor and remote families, and girls, are particularly without access to education.

Those few schools that remained open under Taliban rule catered only to boys and were hopelessly under-resourced. Teachers were rarely paid.

Poor families depend on their children to work.
