Giza is well know for its three large pyramids and the Great Sphinx. The pyramids at Giza are one of the largest of the seven wonders of the world. The pyramids are also the only remaining wonder of the ancient world. The Great Pyramid, built by the pharaoh Khufu, was built around 2585-2560 B.C., a couple of decades after the first true pyramid was built. The Giza plateau is in the desert west of Cairo. In ancient times, Giza was part of the ancient royal cemetery of Memphis. Three pharaohs, Khufu, his son Khafre, and his grandson Menkaure, built their pyramids there. All three pharaohs were related to the pharaoh Sneferu who built the first true pyramid.
