Cleopatra

In the 51st century, Cleopatra became the queen of Egypt. Cleopatra wasn't Egyptian, she was Greek. She was 18 years old when she became queen. Her father's name was Ptolemy XII. Cleopatra married her ten-year-old brother whose name was Ptolemy XIII. Since males were only allowed to become pharaoh, Ptolemy became pharaoh, and Cleopatra was his queen.

There were three advisors who guided Ptolemy and ruled in Ptolemy's name. The advisors told Ptolemy it would be better if they ruled because they were older and would make the boy a better ruler. Cleopatra wanted to rule Egypt herself. Since she was older and more intelligent than her brother, Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII, Cleopatra was a danger to power held by Ptolemy's advisors. The advisors forced Cleopatra flee from Egypt in order to save her life. Cleopatra soon wanted to reclaim her throne so she raised an army in Syria. While Cleopatra was in hiding, the powerful Julius Caesar visited Egypt. Since Ptolemy's advisors were afraid Cleopatra would win Caesar's support, they put guards around the palace to keep her from seeing Caesar.

Legend says Cleopatra smuggled herself into the palace wrapped up in a rug. When Caesar saw Cleopatra's beauty he fell in love with her. He was also impressed with her power and intelligence. Caesar had hoped to persuade Ptolemy to rule Egypt peacefully with Cleopatra, but a war between the brother and sister and their supporters began. The battle lasted six months. Fifteen-year-old Ptolemy drowned in his heavy battle armor. Cleopatra soon gave birth to Caesar's son. He was named Ptolemy Caesar, but Cleopatra called him Caesarion.

The Kill

Rumors were going around about Caesar's behavior. Some Romans thought he should take over Egypt instead of letting Cleopatra rule. In the spring of 44 B.C., two men named Brutus and Cassius who were men Caesar trusted completely, planned, with sixty to eighty other men, to kill Caesar. They chose to kill Caesar on March 15. This day is called the Ides of March. Some people warned Caesar, but Caesar ignored them and went to the senate anyway. When Caesar went to the Senate, the senators jumped him and murdered him.

After Caesar's death two other Roman men became powerful. One was Octavion, and the other was Mark Antony. Cleopatra married Mark Antony so Rome wouldn't take over Egypt. Octavion, however, did want Rome to take over Egypt. Soon Antony and Cleopatra were fighting Octavion and Rome. When Cleopatra mistakenly heard Antony was dead, legend says she allowed a poisonous snake to bite and kill her. When Antony, who was still alive, heard Cleopatra was dead, he fell on his sword and killed himself. Neither person wanted to live without the other or be captured by the Romans. When Rome conquered Egypt in 32 B.C. the great era of Egyptian history was over.
