Jackal

A jackal is a dog-like animal that lives in Egypt. It can be a golden or a brown color. You can find jackals in dry open areas. Before the pups are born the mother jackal has nine weeks of pregnancy. The pups are born blind and with no fur. The jackal can have 1-9 pups, but usually they have 2 to 4. A jackal will eat almost anything. It will eat plants, bugs, meat, and birds. Jackals stalk prey in packs. They always share their large prey. The jackal lives up to thirteen years.

The god Anubis, the god of mummification and embalming, had the head of a jackal. Jackals were often found in cemeteries where they would dig up bodies unless they were driven away. Statues of Anubis were painted with the Nile River's sticky black mud. Statues of Anubis were placed in tombs to protect the mummy and its belongings.
