There are twenty-one different types of snakes that live in Egypt, but cobras occur most often. Cobras are cold blooded creatures. That means that they depend on the sun's energy to keep warm. Egyptians wrote about three types of snakebites. The first was the least deadly. It was described as a bite that was harmless, meaning that if you were bitten by a snake, you'd be fine. The second bite was described as a bite that could be treated. That means if you were bitten by a snake, you would get hurt, but you could recover. The last type was the really bad bite which was described as a bite where death comes quickly. That meant that if you were bitten, you'd die right away. |

Sometimes the Egyptians could not treat these bites so the people would die. The Egyptians worshipped snakes. The king's crown was engraved with a snake and Tutankhamen's mask has one too. The goddess Renenutet, the goddess of the harvest, was a cobra. |
