Summary: Woody Mingo, a bully at
Lewis Barnavelt's school, steals Lewis's hat. After running home
crying, Lewis sees his Uncle Jonathan taking down an old chest from
the attic. Mrs. Zimmermann and Rose Rita are there, too. Inside the
chest are some things that belonged to Lewis's grandfather. One thing
that interests Lewis in particular is a special coin that his grandpa
won in a poker game. Lewis asks Mrs. Zimmermann if it is a magical
coin. Even though she says it is not, Lewis knows that it has to be.
The coin seems to make Lewis feel stronger.
At school Lewis punches Woody Mingo, the bully, in the nose. Lewis can feel a magical power pushing his arm down to punch Woody. Lewis knows that it is the coin's magical power. Lewis likes the coin because it protects him from bullies, but he does not like the fact that it is taking over his body.
Rose Rita discovers what is happening. She steals the coin from Lewis, but Lewis steals it back. The coin leads Lewis to a well in the middle of a forest. He is about to fall into it when Rose Rita, Mrs. Zimmermann and his Uncle Jonathan show up. They overcome the coin's power and return home. Lewis figures out that whoever owned the coin before his grandfather has cast an evil spell on it.
