Johnny is a shy thirteen-year-old boy who lives in Duston Heights, Massachusetts with his grandparents. He seems to have a knack for avoiding people and has only three friends. They are Professor Childermass, Byron "Fergie" Ferguson, and Sarah Channing, whom he meets later in the series. To make up for his lack of friends, Johnny reads a lot and is a good chess player. In the stories, Johnny usually goes looking for something and ends up in trouble or is the cause of the trouble. However, he usually is able to figure out a way to stop the demonic occurrence.

Fergie is the same age as Johnny and lives in the same town. However, he is bolder than Johnny and has less money. He usually persuades Johnny to do something and is a good athlete. Like Johnny, he is somewhat intelligent. His mom is worried about him becoming a criminal and reads books like One Hundred Ways to Tell That Your Child is a Juvenile Delinquent but Fergie is really not a bad kid. In a few cases he causes the satanic person or spirit to try to do something terrible, and in some cases he is the one who stops the fiendish act.
