Anthony Monday is a boy of about thirteen years old who lives in Hoosac, Minnesota. Like many of the John Bellairs characters, Anthony has few friends. His friends are an elderly lady named Miss Eells and her brother Emerson. Anthony works for Miss Eells at the Hoosac Public Library. He is a "page" at the library. In most of the stories Anthony is in, he accidentally gets himself into trouble. When solving the trouble, he usually takes the hard way and has nearly lost his life once or twice. Out of all of the main characters in the John Bellairs stories, Anthony is the least afraid and cowardly.
Books Anthony is in: The Treasure of Alpheus Winterborn, The Mansion in the Mist, The Lamp from the Warlock's Tomb, and The Dark Secret of Weatherend.

Miss Eells is Anthony's closest friend. She is an elderly lady who lives a few blocks away from Anthony. She employs Anthony at the library and has a very stubborn brother named Emerson. When Anthony gets himself into trouble, she doesn't hesitate to help Anthony with the problem. Although Anthony usually is the one who saves the day, Miss Eells is the one who drives them places and makes some things happen. Miss Eells is somewhat similar to Professor Childermass.

Emerson Eells is Miss Eells' nice but stubborn brother. He is a somewhat wealthy man who drives a 1938 Cadillac LaSalle. Although Emerson is a lawyer, he studies witchcraft all the time and has many books on the subject. When trouble comes, he neglects other peoples' ideas and makes everybody follow his plan regardless of how wacky or silly it is. Emerson helps Miss Eells and Anthony a lot and takes them on vacation. Emerson is like Dr. Coote in some ways.
