 Step-by-Step Instructions

Make a potato shape out of earth clay. Smooth it out with water making sure there are no cracks.

Form a neck and shoulders from the clay. Give the shoulders a little thickness as they must hold up the whole puppet and give the illusion of having a whole clay body

Using both fingers, poke into the head to make eyes

Form a nose out of excess clay from the eyes, making sure to not pull off any clay. Then take the end of a pencil and push it through the nose to form the nostrils.

Stick a long dowel GENTLY up the figure's neck and into its his head. Do this gently so you don't stick the dowel completely through the head.

Form ears by pulling clay out from each side of the head. Form them in a realistic way. You have now finished the head and shoulders.

To make a hand start off with a tootsie roll shaped clay lump.

Flatten the top half of the hand with your fingers.

Using scissors cut the hand into little fingers. Keep your thumb and other fingers in the correct proportion.

Round off each finger and keep it looking realistic.

If your puppet will be holding something, curve the fingers.

Put the hands around the object.

Repeat the hand directions for the other hand.
