Make a potato shape out of earth clay. Smooth it out with water making sure there are no cracks. |

Form a neck and shoulders from the clay. Give the shoulders a little thickness as they must hold up the whole puppet and give the illusion of having a whole clay body |

Using both fingers, poke into the head to make eyes |

Form a nose out of excess clay from the eyes, making sure to not pull off any clay. Then take the end of a pencil and push it through the nose to form the nostrils. |

Stick a long dowel GENTLY up the figure's neck and into its his head. Do this gently so you don't stick the dowel completely through the head. |

Form ears by pulling clay out from each side of the head. Form them in a realistic way. You have now finished the head and shoulders. |

To make a hand start off with a tootsie roll shaped clay lump. |

Flatten the top half of the hand with your fingers. |

Using scissors cut the hand into little fingers. Keep your thumb and other fingers in the correct proportion. |

Round off each finger and keep it looking realistic. |

If your puppet will be holding something, curve the fingers. |

Put the hands around the object. |
