Character Parts: Narrator (N), Lewis (L), Tarby (T), Mrs. Zimmermann (Z), Uncle Jonathan (J), Mrs. Izard (I)

N: Lewis Barnavelt lost his parents to a horrid car accident. He was sad. His Uncle Jonathan, graciously offered to have Lewis live him.

Scene 1: Lewis pulls his suitcase down from the top of the rack. A man with a bushy red beard has climbed onto the bus.

J: Hello! I've seen many pictures of you. Welcome to New Zebedee.

L: Uhh... Hi.

J: Come on. I'll carry your monstrous bag. Let's go home.

Lewis looks around the fascinating town while they are walking. He sees old Victorians and other interesting houses.

J: We have arrived. There's Barnavelt's Folly. So how do you like it?

L: Wow! I've never lived in a mansion.

N: Lewis soon adapted to living in New Zebedee. He made the acquaintance of Mrs. Zimmermann, the cheerful next door neighbor. He learned his uncle and Mrs. Zimmermann were both witches! Uncle Uncle told Lewis an evil warlock used to live in the mansion, and how a clock could be heard ticking behind every wall in the house. Late at night Uncle Jonathan would roam the house trying to find and stop the warlock's clock, but he never did. The only problem was Lewis had no friends except his long pirate novels and good food. But not for long...

Scene 2: Bell sounds. Lewis walks out of doors.

Crowd of Boys: No fat boy! Not today! You stink too much

Lewis shrugs, holding back tears. Then he breaks out into run. He passes a field, stops, and looks back after hearing a voice.

T: Hey, do you want to play?

Lewis stares at boy with awe. He also peers at Tarby's cast.

L: Can you play with that on?

T: It's just a little bruise. So are you playing?

L: Yeah!

Curtain falls as two boys affectionately hit the ball back and forth crying with delight after good hits and catches.

N: Lewis needs to make sure of his friend's faithfulness. He tells Tarby his uncle will eclipse the moon. When the day arrives, Tarby is amazed but scared and angry for being proven wrong. Tarby had told Lewis his uncle couldn't do it. When Tarby's arm heals, he doesn't meet up with Lewis anymore. Lewis once again must resort to magic to win back his friend. Lewis says HE will raise the dead. The day arrives. Lewis meets Tarby at midnight on Halloween at the graveyard. He will raise the spirit of a mysterious tomb.

Scene 3: Lewis chugs in through the gate to the cemetery

L: Tarby?

T: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Lewis jumps back in shock

T: All sweaty from the climb? Why dontcha lose some weight.

L: Come on. We are here for a reason.

Lewis trudges along with Tarby at his side to large vault. A strange O sign is on door. Lewis draws chalk circles. Then writes Selenna on ground.

The Strange O (Omega)

L: Aba Bebe Bachabe...

The lock on the vault door suddenly breaks open. A rush of air makes Tarby and Lewis cringe. A black pool comes out of the opening door. The boys stare in terror at the door. Two small pools of yellow appear.

T: Runnnnnnnnn!

Boys dash off into distance

N: Lewis did not know what he had unleashed. The next day a story of the tomb's vandalism was in the newspaper. Little did Lewis know the spirit he unleashed was after him until he was in a scary car chase. Lewis then knew something was wrong with the spirit he had unleashed. After hearing about the strange lady moving in across the street, Lewis becomes even more scared. Soon he has nightmares of past events. Then one day Lewis finds a large amount of paperwork written by Isaac Izard explaining how his clock when wound, will cause the end of the world. Lewis discovers Selenna Izard, the lady across the street and Isaac Izard's wife, is the spirit he raised Halloween night. Lewis knows she has the key to wind the clock.

Scene 4: In living room.

J: It appears to me we have no chance of survival. (A ticking sound is very loud in background) This death clock will wind up and kill us. Our last chance is to get find out where it is and destroy it.

MZ: Oh, so how are we expected to find these directions?

J: No, Lewis will invent crazy directions. Maybe something will come of this, and the clock will be found.

L: Yes, something I will enjoy!

Lewis scribbles on a notepad.

L: Done!

J: First stick real candles in all windows of the house.

All the characters run around out of scene

N: The characters continue their instructions until the last one, when they pause.

L: Now we must get the eight ball and consult our sources.

Everyone laughs.

Uncle Jonathan goes and fetches an eight ball

Z: Go on, ask it your question.

J: Where is the clock?

They look into eight ball.

L: Here, let me try. Where is the clock?

Lewis holds up ball.

J: Coal Pit? I don't have one in my house.

The liquid in the ball becomes bubbly.

J: Ah, coal bin. Well that's not much better.

Z: Come on. You must have one somewhere.

J: Oh, yes, before I converted to oil. Follow me downstairs.

Scene 5: The dark basement

J: Well, there don't seem to be any secret panels.

Z: Maybe the wall is fake. The ticking of the clock is near.

J: Of course.

Uncle Jonathan begins a brutal attack on wall, and it crumbles.

J: A door. Let's open it.

When they open the door, they see a long tunnel that looks like a mine shaft. A pendulum clock is on the ground ticking loudly. Mrs. Izard, the spirit lady appears behind them. Uncle Jonathan and Mrs. Zimmermann turn around at the sound of her voice.

I: HA, HA, HA! You have found the clock for me and fallen into my grasp.

Lewis is cringing with his back turned to Izard. Uncle Jonathan and Mrs. Zimmermann are staring at the hand with a candle coming from it. They can not move. The clock is in front of Lewis.

I: Stupid child, turn around and surrender!

L: NOOOOOOOOO! (Lewis takes the clock in hands and throws it to ground, shattering it)

Mrs. Izard disintegrates with a loud howl.

N: Lewis, Uncle Jonathan, and Mrs. Zimmermann live happily waiting for another ordeal to come their way.
