Scientists spent more than $240 million dollars last year studying the special characteristics of the enzymes inside extremophiles. Many different industries would like to use these enzymes in making products like artificial sweeteners, stonewashing bluejeans, and in identifying the make up of the genes of criminals. Scientists hope that the enzymes inside extremophiles will replace regular enzymes used in enzyme based industries.
