The medical industry has discovered that there are some uses for extremophiles in medicine. More than $250 million dollars was spent by industries to find out how the special enzymes inside extremophile could be used. Scientists are searching for ways that the special proteins inside extremopiles can be used to fight infectious diseases and genetic diseases. Enzymes are proteins and are sometimes used as biological catalysts. Enzymes inside extremophiles have been given the name of extremozymes. Protein catalysts cause chemical reactions in extremophiles that allow them to survive in deadly environments. Before extremophiles were discovered, regular proteins had to be protected from breaking down and becoming useless. Scientists hope that the proteins in extremophiles will not need special treatment like regular proteins. This will save all industries a great deal of money.
