The pentagon was not the original target of the terrorists who hijacked United Airlines Flight #77. Their target was to be either the White House or the Capital Building. When the terrorists could not locate the buildings that it wanted to strike, it circled Washington and crashed into the Pentagon. There were 187 people killed and hundreds more wounded. The section of the Pentagon that was hit was being rennovated at the time, or there would have been more people killed. The section of the Pentagon that was destroyed is now being rebuilt.

  Several days after the crash, the smoke clears some. The Pentagon is still smoldering, but rescue work continues.
