    April 19, 1995
At approximately 9:00 in the morning an explosion in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. The explosion came from a rented truck that was loaded with explosives, parked in front of the building, abandoned, and exploded. The building had many offices and a daycare inside. When the bomb went off the people and children who had just arrived were inside when the building blew up. The entire front and most of the interior of the building was demolished. Rescue workers spent two weeks climbing through the debris left by the explosion. Many hundreds of people were injured, but 168 were killed. This was, at the time, considered to be the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil. To make matters worse, it was discovered that two American citizens, Timothy McVeigh and his friend Terry Nichols were responsible for the attack.

After the bombing of the Murrah building, an officer arrested Timothy McVeigh by accident. He was stopped by a police officer for driving a vehicle without a license plate. He was going to be released from jail on April 21, 1995, but someone recognized him as the suspected bomber.

Piles of rubble were all that were left of the front of the Murrah building. Rescuers were met with a jumble of debris. It was a rush to find victims before they died. Stairwells and other large pieces were marked so that rescuers would know where they were looking for vicitims.
