Before Tornado Season     During a Tornado Warning
                     
1. practice family tornado drills   1. immediately go to a small interior room on the lowest level of your house (a bathroom or closet will be best if there is no basement)
2. identify a place in the home to meet   2. stay away from windows
3. understand the difference between tornado watches and warnings   3. do not take shelter near a corner in your house
(debris collects there)
4. contact the Red Cross for information about tornado safety   4. get under a strong piece of furniture and protect your head by covering it with your arms
                   
Important Supplies   Outdoors or in Your Car
             
1. flashlight and batteries   1. get indoors if you can
2. battery operated radio and batteries   2. if you can't get indoors find a ditch or behind a bilding
3. first aid kit   3. NEVER try to out drive a tornado
4. food and water   4. get out of your car and into a building if possible
5. non-electric can opener   5. DO NOT hide under an overpass (strong tornadoes can suck you out from under them)
6. medicine  
7. cash and credit cards  
8. sturdy shoes  
           
Communication Plan    
1. designate one family, member who lives out of town, to be the main contact person for the family in case members are separated    
2. make a plan on how to get together with family members after a tornado strikes    
3. make sure that all family members have the names and phone numbers for the contact person
