  NOAA photograph   Tornadoes are violent destructive funnel clouds formed during severe thunderstorms. The wind inside these funnel clouds can spin more than 250 miles per hour. The funnel cloud can be up to one mile wide and it can travel a distance of 50 miles on the ground. The United States experiences more tornadoes than any other country in the world.
