Meteorologists who have studied when hurricanes are likely to form have found that they develop only during certain times of the year. They call it hurricane season and it lasts for six months of every year. In the Eastern Pacific Ocean, hurricane season runs from May 15 through November 30, and in the Atlantic Ocean it lasts from June though November 30th. Most hurricanes form during August and September and those hurricanes will probably be the strongest storms of the hurricane season. The weather conditions during August and September are more favorable for the development of hurricanes. |

| During hurricane season a special group of military pilots fly planes into hurricanes. They are called hurricane hunters. Click the wings to learn more about them. | ||||||

| This map shows how ocean temperatures around the equator warm up enough to produce the conditions that are necessary for hurricanes to form. NASA's GOES satellite takes readings of ocean temperatures as it orbits the earth. It sends information back to NASA scientists who pass it on to meteorologists at the National Weather Service who make weather forecasts for the United States. | ||||||
