The GOES Satellite Program has placed many satellites in outer space that sit over the areas of the world's oceans and seas where hurricanes and other severe weather might form. Click the image at the top of this screen to visit the GOES server and see up to date satellite images of all of the world's ocean regions.

Hurricanes change the heat and moisture from the warm ocean waters into rain and wind power.       As water vapor is drawn into the clouds that rotate around the eye wall of a hurricane, it releases energy by producing heat. This is partly responsible for an increase in hurricane strength.

NOAA, National Ocean and Atmospheric Association, watches the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean from May to November. It investigates any suspicious tropical system that might develop into a hurricane. When it is not hurricane season for North and South America, NOAA trains meteorologists in other countries. NOAA also works to find better ways to find and predict the weather, especially hurricanes. Click the NOAA image at the top of this screen to visit NOAA and learn more about hurricane forecasting.

Hurricane Hunters strap themselves into their planes and fly off into the most dangerous storms on earth. They fly into hurricanes so that they can take weather readings inside the storms that will help them understand more about them. Hurricane hunters and other scientists work together to make the world safer from the effects of hurricanes. Click the wing image above to learn more about these brave people and their job.
