Winter weather in the United States usually occur between the months of December through March, however, winter conditions sometimes occur as late as in April. NOAA Image Factors in the climate patterns determine whether or not the winter season will be mild or severe. Wind patterns from the Arctic affect the temperature in regions as far south as the Gulf of Mexico, and as far west as Oregon.
