Everybody uses oil.
Most people know that it's used for gasoline, motor oil, and
kerosene. Oil also is used for drugs, fertilizers, plastics,
insecticides, and among other things we use everyday. To
make all these things, oil must be transferred by tankers
around the world. Everyday there is a chance that an oil
tanker will be involved with a major oil
spill.
The Exxon
Valdez struck a reef and spilled a thick, cloud of
oil into the sea. People remember the famous oil
spill that occurred in Prince William Sound on May
23, 1989.

It
covered 800 miles of the coast of Alaska. As with many other
spills, sea life was killed by the oil. In Prince William
Sound, turtles, fish, salmon, and even sea otters were
killed or injured by the spilled oil.

We would like to know about any oil spills that have happened in your area. Please provide us with information about it here. We'll post the information you share on the map below. Oil spills are truly a world-wide problem.
