Jellyfishes can be found in most of the world's oceans. A few even inhabit freshwater. They live all over the ocean in the mid and upper levels.
Jellyfish are shaped like an umbrella. Under their skin, there is a jellylike substance called mesogloea. They have many tentacles containing stinging cells that inject a paralyzing poison into their prey. When jellyfishes are hungry, they sink down and catch food by stinging it. They like to eat shrimp and plankton.
Some jellyfishes are poisonous. The sea wasp has a deadlier poison than any snake in the world. People have died in less than 3 minutes. from being stung by a sea wasp. The poison works by attacking the nervous system. Dead jellyfishes can still sting as long as their tentacles are still moist. The giant jellyfish is 7 feet wide, but bigger giant jellyfishes live in the Arctic Ocean. Some giant jellyfishes are blue and look a lot like big blobs of blueberry jelly. Some of them are orange and look like huge fried eggs.
Giant jellyfish look beautiful floating on top of the ocean because they have no sharp teeth, no suckers, or claws. Remeber they are really very dangerous! They have 200 really poisonous tentacles that can be more than 100 feet long!
