The Blessing of the Animals
Each October Father Rick blesses all scaled, feathered, and furry creatures. This begins the Creation Cycle at St. Mary's. Dozens of dogs are blessed in this annual event honoring Francis of Assisi, Friar who died on October 4, 1226.
St. Francis was one of the greatest preachers of all time. His concern with poverty and ecology gave him a strikingly modern quality. Although he was a wealthy merchant's son, he gave all he had to help the poor and lepers and was contented with only the barest necessities for himself and the "little brothers" who joined him in his new life style. He boldly opposed the abuse of political power, even when it was encouraged by the Bishop of Rome.
