Indian Legends

In Chapter 4 Bodger smelled wood smoke. He and Tao followed the smell into an Indian camp. There the terrier and cat were fed. The old Indian woman even made an ointment from cattails to treat Bodger's many gashes he received from the fight with the bear cub.
"That night they became immortal . . . the ancient womean had recognized the old dog at once by his color and companion: he was the White Dog of the Ojibways. . . Spirits had sent him, hungry and wounded, to test tribal hospitality. . . He had been made welcome, fed and succored: the omen would prove fortunate."
