The Labrador Retriever is a medium sized dog. It is between 21 to 25 inches tall and weighs between 65 and 80 pounds. The Labrador is strongly built with a wide skull. It has a wedge-shaped head with a narrow muzzle. Their noses are black or brown. Their ears hang close to their heads.

Labs' coats are short and dense. This thick coat is water-resistant. The Labrador Retriever's coat may be different colors including black, yellow and chocolate. Labs have powerful jaws, but friendly eyes. The lab has an otter-like tail.

Labs are bred as gun dogs. This bred was originally developed in Newfoundland, Canada to be a fisherman's helper. They were used to help pull boats, pull in nets, and retrieve fish. They were soon used as hunting dogs. The lab loved water and was eager to please its owner. This caused it to become popular as an upland bird and waterfowl hunter. Today labs are also used as a service dog as well. Labradors live 10 to 12 years.
