Lightning

Do you remember the first time you ever saw a lightning bolt? The power of it was unbelievable. Without enough scientific understanding, lightning can be scary.

Scientists started learning more about lightning after Ben Franklin tested an experiment. They learned that although there is really no safe way to avoid a lightning strike, they thought of some ways to provide a little protection.

About 32 years ago, scientists started lightning detection networks. Today, they can track any lightning strikes all over the country. Their systems use magnetic sensors and computers to show where and when the bolt hits. Lightning is scary because of its ferocious power but can be very interesting to watch. Lightning is nothing but pure energy so just stay out of its way!
