Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd president.  He served from 1776-1779.  He was born on April 13, 1743, in Virginia on a tobacco plantation owned by his father.  He became a member of The Virginia House of Burgesses in 1769.  He married Martha Wayles Skelton in 1772, and had 6 children. He was a successful lawyer even though he didn't enjoy law. In Jefferson's first attempt to in the House of Burgesses he failed to pass a bill allowing people to free their slaves. Mostly written by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence was approved and signed by other men and congress on July 4, 1776. Thomas Jefferson was a Democratic Republican.  He died on July 4, 1826.
