So you love watching movies or television, but can't always go to the movies or see your favorite show. Well, here comes the greatest invention for you, it is called a VCR and has many purposes. The VCR is a very useful device, and many people have one. In 1956, Charles Ginsburg and Ray Dolby invented the first commercial reel-to-reel videotape recorder while working for the Ampex Corporation. It sold very well because it allowed people to record shows and then replay them later.

Before that, you had to watch a TV program live and that was it.

The use of a VCR is that you can enjoy a movie and you can record things that you might miss so when you get back home, you can watch everything you have missed.

In 1969, Sony created the first inexpensive VCR. Then companies would produce videos, and so the first Blockbuster video was created in Dallas, Texas in 1985. A problem with the VCR is that the audio and video are read at different speeds so that sometimes the audio is played before the video. A VCR reads an audio and videotape with two separate heads and plays them together on the TV.
