If you stick your hands in your ears, will you be able to hear better? Is it impossible? It's possible if you get the sound to travel to your ears through string rather than air. The first thing you will need to accomplish this experiment is a piece of string that is 36 in. long. The next thing you need is a wire clothes hangar. After that you need two metal spoons. The last thing you need is a metal fork.

  1. Tie the middle of the string to the hook of the hangar.
  2. Wind each end of the string twice around the end of each of your index fingers.
  3. While you hold the hangar in mid-air, ask a friend to tap the hangar a few times with a spoon and notice the sound you hear.
  4. Put your index fingers in your ears and lean forward so that the hangar hangs freely. Ask your friend to tap the hangar again. Then figure out the difference in the sound.
  5. Detatch the string from the hangar. Tie the fork and a spoon to the string instead.
  6. Have your friend tap the the fork and spoon with the other spoon while you hold the string in mid-air.
  7. Have your friend tap them again while you keep your fingers with the string in your ears. Now what is the difference in sound?
