These are some books we recommend about magic.

All of the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling are amazing books that you never want to put down!  The four are:

  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Book 2
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Book 3
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Book 4

These books by J.R. Tolkien aren't only about magic, but about action too!

  • The Hobbit      The Prequel to: 
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings Book 1
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Book 2
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the Kings Book 3

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Series by C.S. Lewis

Beginning with The Magician's Nephew or The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, these books tell the story of a magical land named Narnia.  In The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, four brothers and sisters find their way to Narnia through an empty wardrobe.  While they are there, they must fight the evil queen who has covered Narnia with winter.

 The Secret of Platform 13 by Eva Ibbotson

In a busy train station in London, there lies a gump, a doorway to a hidden world. Once every nine years, for nine days, the gump opens. In this world there is an island with more magical creatures than can be thought of. When the baby prince of the island is kidnapped in London right before the gump closes, four rescuers are sent to get him, a hag named Odge, a wizard named Cornelius, a fey named Gurkie, and and an ogre named Hans, are sent to rescue him, and this story tells of their wild adventures.

Parzival, The Quest  of the Grail Knight by Katherine Paterson

Parzival, a child who has been raised in the woods by his mother, does not know that he was meant to inherit several kingdoms. He also does not know of what is about to happen to him, of him becoming a knight. But with with all this success, he fails to save a king's life, which was his job to do. Though not a slave, he has become one, for he must search for the cure, the holy grail.                      

The Grey King by Susan Cooper

In this book, a Welsh legend says that there is a harp of gold hidden in a hill that will be found by a boy and a white dog with silver eyes, but Will Stanton knows nothing about this. That is, until he meets a boy named Bran, who has a white dog with silver eyes. Will, an immortal who is dedicated to saving the world from dark forces, has to now find the gold harp and save it in a battle against the forces of light and dark.

Dealing With Dragons by Patricia Wrede

Dealing with Dragons is a great story about a princess who isn't like a princess.  She runs away from the castle to live with the dragons and cook and clean, and have many more adventures.

The Phoenix and the Carpet

        Cyril, Anthea, Robert and Jane live in England, but they can travel the world thanks to a magic carpet their mother buys from a carpet store by accident. In this book the children go everywhere from India to Unknown lands. But the children don't only have a special carpet. Inside the carpet is an egg that hatches into the Phoenix, who now accompanies them wherever the children go!
