What is Computer Science?

In the world today almost everyone uses computers. Computer science is different from using the computers that are all around us. Computer scientists develop things for the computers that the rest of us will use. Most computer scientists are either programmers or researchers.

Computer programmers tell the computer what to do. They write programs in languages that the computer can understand. Computer programming seems to be a very new science, however, the first program was written in 1843 by a woman named Ada Lovelace. In 1979 a programming language was named ìAdaî in her honor.

Computer scientists are not only programmers. Many do different kinds of research. Researchers in this area are trying to understand whether machines can think like people, or perhaps are trying to actually create intelligent machines. Other researchers try to improve computers. They may develop new methods for computer programming. Computer scientists doing research often work at universities or in the research and development departments or high tech companies.

 What is Engineering?

Engineers apply science to solve practical problems. There are many different kinds of engineering and each kind of engineer has knowledge of different scientific fields.

Engineers need to use a variety of skills. Their work involves a lot of creative problem solving. They also need to know how to work in teams. They need to work with different people during different stages of a project.

Engineers have achieved many remarkable things. For example, in the last 25 years, jumbo jets, laser computer micro-processors, and satellites have all been designed by engineers. These and many more achievements have changed the world today.

 What is Technology?

Technology is all around us. A very simple definition is that technology is anything made by humans, as opposed to things made by nature.

The tools humans make to help them succeed in their natural environment would be another definition of technology. For example, thinks like coats which keep people warm in the winter or things like a hammer which could help someone build a home.

In today's world, when the word technology comes to mind, people are usually thinking about inventions like the computer, satellites, or even an artificial heart. Tables, can openers, and paper, which are all everyday items can also be referred to as technology.

 What is Science?

Many things may come to mind when you hear the word science. You might think about the space shuttle blasting off, or you may think about a crazy scientist with wild hair like Einstein or Darwin. what do all of these images have in common and what makes them scientific? Itís hard to figure out exactly what makes something science.

Science comes from the Latin word knowing. Scientists study only the physical world. They learn about it by using their five senses, like seeing and hearing. Scientists also often use instruments like a telescope and a stethoscope.

Another aspect of science is that it always tries to ask questions that can be tested. For example, determining when the universe come into existence would be a good question because you could design experiments to test the answer.

In science your experiment has to be repeatable. If one scientist performs an experiment under a set of conditions and gets a certain result then another scientist should get the same result. Their work would not be considered knowledge if only one scientist produced the result.

One of the most popular beliefs about what makes science different is that it follows the scientific method. This method involves asking a questions, performing an experiment, gathering observations, and coming to conclusions.
