Back To Helping Hands Room

On Thursday October 11th, 2001, the 5th grade held a walk-a-thon for the World Trade Center disaster. The money is going to the families of the people who were lost in the tragedy. Before we started our walk around the reservoir, we stopped at the 85th Street Fire Station, Engines 22 and 13. Claudia went there for a field-trip in pre-school so she remembers it very well.

At the fire station we presented our cards. The firemen received almost 100 cards from the 5th graders. There were over 100 of us there including teachers and chaperones. We started to walk around the reservoir on our two-mile walk. We walked on the bridle path. After our walk we stopped to have our lunches behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

A walk-a-thon is when you walk a certain amount of miles, blocks or any other measurements of distance. You get people to sponsor you, which means that they pay a certain amount of money per block, or mile, or distance. It was an experience that no one would ever forget. We made $10,350.75. It was a big hit.
