State Bird

Bird Name: Cardinal
Scientific Name: Cardinalis cardinalis
Year Made State Bird: 1949

A female cardinal has a crest like her mate, but she does not have  his brilliant color. Female cardinals are more the color of old red barns in need of paint.  A male cardinal fiercely defends its territory, but he can't always keep away cats, snakes, owls, and cowbirds.
