In 1742, coal was discovered in West Virginia.

In 1754-1755 the French and the Indians defeated troops that were led by George Washington and General Edward Braddock.

During the Civil War Confederate troops raided West Virginia 56 times.

In 1774, the first battle of the Revolutionary War was in West Virginia.

In 1815, the first national-gas well was dicovered.

The first Civil War land battle was in West Virginia.

In June 20,1863 West Virginia became a state.

In 1896 the first rural delivery began.

In 1920-1921 miners fought with police, mine guards,and federal troops in a dispute over  organizing unions.

In 1927 West Virginia became the leading coal producing state.
