Famous People

 

Washakie was an Indian chief of the eastern Shoshone Indian nation in Utah and Wyoming.  Washakie provided aid to many immigrants who were moving west over the Oregon Trail in 1840.  He helped Mormon settlers in the Utah Territory in 1850.  He was born about 1804 and died in 1900.

Brigham Young was born in 1801.  He led the Mormons from Illinois to Utah and built a church there.  He became the Mormon leader in 1844 after the church founder, Joseph Smith, was shot to death.  In Young's early life, he attended school for twelve days.  Brigham Young worked as a painter, carpenter, and glazier.  He died in 1877.
