Agriculture began in 1856, when pioneers from Iowa and Minnesota came to an area near Sioux Falls to raise crops. The Sioux Indians, in an 1858 treaty with the federal government, gave up the land between the Big Sioux and Missouri rivers. More settlers arrived after the Indians left.
