South Dakota's state tree is scarce in
South Dakota. The white spruce can be found only in the
Black Hills of South Dakota, where it's called "Black Hills Spruce."
Forests of this evergreen once covered much of South Dakota.
When the North American climate warmed up years ago, the range of cold-loving
white spruce moved north. Today the tree grows from Alaska to Newfoundland
and along the northern border of several states.
