Historic Ohio

    The Underground Railroad in Ohio helped slaves reach Canada. The slaves had escaped from the South across the Ohio River. Many abolitionists lived in Ohio.
 

    B.F. Goodrich began making rubber products in Akron, Ohio, in 1878.  Akron became a major tire manufacturer after pneumatic tire (tires filled with compressed air) were first used on automobiles in 1895.
 

    The Wright Brothers built the first wind tunnel in North America in Dayton, Ohio, in 1901. They used it to conduct experiments that led to the first successful airplane flight.
