Crops and Natural Resources

Ohio has about 72,000 farms. Farms and ranches covers about half of the states land area. Soybeans are the states leading farm product. Corn ranks second. Other field crops raised in the state are hay, oats, popcorn, and wheat.

Fertile soils and valuable minerals are Ohio's most important natural resources. Fertile soils deposited by ancient glaciers are found in all parts of Ohio except the southeast.

Coal is Ohio's most important mined product.  Coal deposits in eastern and southeastern Ohio have an estimated 24 billion tons of coal.
