John C. Fremont mapped Nevada during expeditions in 1843 to 1845. Fremont was born in Savannah, Georgia. He explored much of he area between the Rocky Mountain and the Pacific Ocean. He was sometimes called “The Pathfinder”. He was the first person to map Nevada.
A monk named Francisco Garces made the first known crossing of Nevada.
In 1861 a man named R. C. Gridley of Austin auctioned a single bag of flour over and over. He collected $275,000 and gave the money to the U. S. Sanitary Commission.
The Comstock Lode, a rich deposit of gold and silver, was discovered at Virginia City in 1859.
Wovoka was the founder of the Ghost Dance religion. He was a Paiute Indian religious leader. In the late 1880’s he came down with a fever. During this fever, he had a dream that God taught him a dance. He dreamt that god told him to teach everyone this dance. This dance later became known (by white people) as the Ghost Dance.
