There are many interesting places to visit in New Mexico.
- The Aztec Ruins were built by Ancestral Pueblo people, the Anasazi, in the 1100's to the 1200's. Aztec Ruins National Monument is the site of a reconstructed kiva which is the largest structure of its kind in the southwestern United States.
Bandelier National Monument contains hundreds of ruins of Anasazi cliff houses and pueblo-style dwellings. Bandelier has 32,000 acres and 70 miles of trails leading to the ruins. Tsankawi is a separate section of the monument where cave dwellings, petroglyphs, and an unexcavated ruin are protected.
Petroglyph National Monument is near Albuquerque. It has about 15,000 rock carvings made by Native American artists hundreds of years ago.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park became a National Monument in 1923 and a National Park in 1930. In 1995 it was designated as a World Heritage Site. The park preserves the 83 caves within the fossil reef. Carlsbad was the location where the movie "Atlantis" was filmed. Thousands of bats live in these caves.
El Morro Mesa is the site of ruins of dwellings built by the Atsinna Pueblo Indians. It is located on the Navajo Nation.
Acoma Pueblo was built hundreds of years ago on top of a 357 foot mesa. It is probably the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States.
El Camino Real is the oldest U.S. road built by Europeans. The 1,800-mile long "King's Road" was built about 1851. It followed the Rio Grande from Mexico City, Mexico, to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The Kit Carson Home and Museum in Taos is a place to learn about the life and times of this famous frontiersman.
