Louisiana's
state bird, the brown pelican, is the largest of the official state birds.
It's also the only one that's a feathered fisherman. They often dive
headlong into the ocean for their prey.
Brown pelicans
live along the coasts of Louisiana and other southern states. Brown pelicans
are returning to Louisiana in great numbers after nearly disappearing from
the state in the 1960's and 1970's. The pelicans were being poisoned by
DDT, chemical that washed into the sea.
