Janet Reno was the first woman to serve as attorney general of the United States.  President Bill Clinton appointed her in 1993.  Before her appointment, Reno had served 15 years as state attorney for Florida’s Dade County, which included the city of Miami.  Reno was born in Miami.  She earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and law degree from Harvard University.  She became a lawyer in Miami.

Maurice Ferre became the first Hispanic mayor of Miami, Florida, in 1973.  He was appointed to the office after Mayor David Kennedy had been charged with planning to offer and receive bribes.  Later that year, Ferre was elected to the office.  He was re-elected to five additional terms beginning in 1975.  Ferre failed to win re-election in 1985.  As mayor, he began a major force in extensive development of Miami’s Downtown area.
