Most Connecticuters were farmers when the state was first settled, but
farming became less important in the 1800's when land became scarce and
many people went to work in the factories. Connecticuters still run more
than 3,500 farms. They produce goods such as eggs, milk, and tobacco, which
provide a small part of the state's income.
