April 2, 2002 Dear McDonald’s Corporation, We are 6th grade students at Chimacum Middle School, Washington. We are creating a website on pygmy marmosets for the Thinkquest USA contest (http://www.thinkquest.org/tqusa/). Here is a link to our website: /CR0210960/. While searching for information on the rainforest, which is the home of the pygmy marmoset, we came across the following website, http://forests.org/archive/general/macfore.html, with a June 1996 article titled "McDonald’s Linked to Rainforest Destruction". The website article states facts about the McLibel trial. We also visited your website, specifically your Rainforest preservation page (http://www.mcdonalds.com/countries/usa/community/environ/info/rainforest/index.html), where you state that the, "preservation of tropical rain forest land is a top priority at McDonald's." What we would like to know is: 1) How big are your ranches abroad, especially in Brazil’s Amazon? 2) What proof can you send us? We are going to provide a link to the page about the trial, a copy of this letter, and we would also like to post any responses we get from you. We would like to know that you do not own land that was once rainforest. 3) How many acres of rainforest have been cut down in the past for your beef ranches? 4) What monitors how many acres of rainforest are cut down annually for your ranches? 5) Do you cut down rainforest trees for paper bags? If so, which rainforests? 6) How many acres of rainforest are you allowed to cut down a year for your ranches? If you would like to email us your response, here is our teacher’s email address: al_gonzalez@csd49.org Thank you for your help. The Powerful Pygmies As of 4-3-02, McDonald's replied! Click here.
