Just How Big is the
Solar System?
| To demonstrate just how big the solar system is we did the following activity. All you need is Play Doh and a plastic knife. Try it out yourself to get an idea of the size of the sun and other planets. | |||||||||||||||||||
![]() This is the size of the sun. |
![]() This is the size of all the planets, moons, meteor, etc. in the solar system compared to the sun. |
![]() Take the Play Doh out of the container and using the plastic knife cut it into 10 equal pieces. |
![]() Put seven of those pieces together and that is about the size of Jupiter. |
![]() Put two of the remaining three pieces together and that is about the size of Saturn. |
![]() Take the remaining piece and cut it into two pieces and these are about the size of Neptune and Uranus. |
| About now you should be asking, "But what about Earth, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Pluto, and everything else that makes up the rest of the solar system?" Well all the crumbs and what is left in the container is what makes those up. Pretty small compared to the sun, huh? | |||||||||||||||||||
