On December 16, 1944 Hitler and Germany troops surprised and overwhelmed the Americans in the Ardennes forest in Belgium and Luxembourg. But Germany lacked the troops and fuel to breakthrough. Within two weeks the Americans stopped the German advance. This battle was named the Battle of the Bulge because of the bulging shape of the battleground on a map.
