The carrier pigeon (also called the homing pigeon) is a REALLY special pigeon. It can carry messages like a telegram. It is built to go at a rate of 60 miles per hour. It can be seen living in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

But what's really special about the carrier pigeon is the homing ability. With this skill, the pigeon cannot be lost. It will know the right way to go to every time! The only time it will be useless is on foggy or cloudy days.

The Egyptians and the Persians first used carrier pigeons 3,000 years ago. They also were used to proclaim the winner of the Olympics.

The most famous carrier pigeon was the one that carried a message in 25 minutes. If that doesn't sound fast, the pigeon had to fly for 39 kilometers. That's 24 miles!

When the pigeon finally delivered the message, its leg was completely busted and it's chest all shot up by bullets. That is why carrier pigeons are no longer used today.
