The United States Military |
History of The United States Air Force Balloons were used as observation post, and there was a balloon Corps made in 1861. In 1903 the Wright Brother made the very first successful motor powered flight. During WW1 the Germans used blimps for night attacks and to fine the position of there enemy. The us was not first ones that realize how important air power really was. At first planes were only used to find out information about the enemy position. Then Pilots began to attack the enemy. Believe it or not some pilots trailed behind a bomb with a wire hopping to hit a enemy flying below. When machine guns were put behind the propeller they worked great when they did not interfere with the propeller. So in 1915 a engineer made a timing device which help a lot because the gun were needed there. The device was used so the bullets did not damage the propeller. Soon the united states of America was making 12,000 planes a year, and thousands of pilots to fly them. Plus the personal had increased from 300 to over19,000 in just to years. During W.W.1 the Germans used blimps to make night raids into the enemys country. after a while in 1918 the U.S air power was very strong! In 1921 the first in air refueling was done. the air force played a big part in W.W.2 because when the president declared war the air force went right in and bombed them hard and good. In January 1943 the U.S made the very fist daylight raid directly over Germany. And destroyed factories and many air fields. Though not much has been said about them many women played a big part in W.W. 2 |
