Ramses was an Egyptian pharaoh who was very famous and he ruled Egypt from about 1290 B.C. - 1224B.C. He was very young when he came to the throne as a co-ruler for his father Seti I. In the beginning of his ruling, he was trying to end Hitite control over Syria. Ramses fought a battle against the Hitite's at Kadesh around the year of 1285 B.C. Around 1269 B.C., Ramses made a treaty with the Hitite king that got Syria divided between them. During the rest of his ruling, Ramses focused his energies on a building program. In the Nile Delta, Ramses built a new capital. He finished the hypostyle (columned) Great Hall of the Temple of Amon-Re at Karnak. Ramses built temples in almost every important city in Egypt. People think that Ramses was the pharoah in the Biblical book of Exodus. |
