Mr.
Fontanilla is the Art teacher at Chesapeake Bay Academy. Stephanie
asked him to talk to her about his views on art.
Steph:
How did you become interested in sculpturing?
Mr. Fontanilla: When I was in college I had a professor
who used to make these remarkable sculptures. Every time we went
to class we saw something he created and it was unlike anything
we have ever seen. He always encouraged us to put our feelings into
what we did. Each day we would sketch and research other sculpture
that was in and outside of our class.
Steph: Have you created any artwork for famous or well-known
people?
Mr. Fontanilla: To this date I have not. Right now I prefer
doing what I am doing, teachings people how to paint and create
sculpture and photography.
Steph:
What is your basic philosophy regarding art?
Mr. Fontanilla: I believe everyone is artistic. It is
all about perception. How you see it, what you perceive about the
object you are trying to create and also what you put into it.
Steph:
I know you also like painting. What is your favorite medium?
Mr. Fontanilla: My favorite medium is photography.
Photography is one of the mediums you can basically change around
and play. The impression you put on a negative is permanent. In
photography you capture time, which also captures history, emotions,
feelings and life in general.
Steph:
What materials do you like to work with?
Mr. Fontanilla: In photography materials I prefer working
with slides. Slides enable you to go beyond the paper. You billboards
and photo shoots like modeling
